Amazon’s new Kindle e-readers and Kindle Fire tablets

This week, on September 6, Amazon released updates to it’s Kindle ebook readers and the line of Kindle Fire tablets. In case you missed, here are the details:

3 new Kindle tablets: Kindle Fire HD 7-inch, Kindle Fire HD  8.9-inch, and the Next-Gen Kindle Fire.

The new Kindle Fire HD now features HD graphics, two different screen sizes and bigger storage. The 7-inch model starts at $199 and the 8.9-inch model starts at $299. The 4G LTE Wireless version however costs a hefty $599.

Next-Gen Kindle Fire now only costs  $159 while retaining all the features of it predecessor and an additional faster processor speed and longer battery life. These attractive price point on Kindle tablets are very competitive and attractive for consumers.

The Kindle Paperwhite — The new Kindle Paperwhite is a back-lit touch screen ereader. The WiFi model costing $119, and the 3G version without requiring data contract or plan is priced at $179.

The entry-level Kindle e-reader, named Next-Gen Kindle is cheaper now ($69) and features faster page-turn speed, new fonts, and crisper text.

Amazon has choosen to feature Bing as it’s default search engine in it’s Kindle Fire tablets.

Amazon press meet on Sept 6, new Kindles expected

Amazon has called a press conference on Sept. 6 in Santa Monica, California. The company is expected to announce upgrades to its e-readers line, Kindle or the tablet Kindle Fire.

There were rumors of Amazon preparing a 10-inch upgrade to Kindle Fire. Amazon will most likely price the device aggressively as the device will most likely be the most trusted vehicle for the sale of it’s online products.

In the invitation sent to selected journalists, Amazon didn’t give much information about what the press meet was about. This event is being held after a year when Kindle Fire was released and other Kindles were upgraded on on Sept. 28, 2011.

The sale of Kindle Fire is told to be in declining trend in the recent time because of competition from similar devices and the anticipation of a newer version of the device.

A $199 Kindle Fire unveiled – traditional Kindle price reduced

Amazon today unveiled a $199 ‘Kindle Fire’ Tablet. The price of the traditional kindles were also reduced to a price point starting at $79.

The new Kindle Fire sounds more like a nail on the coffin of Blackberry Playbook with similar form factors and other details. With a lower than expected price, Amazon Kindle Fire demands to be a game changer in the tablet market.

Amazon’s claims to “work hard to charge customers less” might have some truth in it as the Kindle Fire is “likely losing about $50 per Kindle Fire“. Apple’s iPad in the other hand, is believed to be sold with a 30%+ gross margin.

In addition, Amazon has bundled a new browser called Amazon Silk with it’s custom built Android Operating System running in the Kindle Fire.

Amazon media event on Sept 28, is the Amazon Kindle Tablet ready?

Amazon has sent out invitations for a media event to be held on September 28, Wednesday.

The invitation doesn’t mention what the event is related to. The event is being held at the time when the company is expected to introduce its custom made Android tablet. The tablet expected to feature either 9-inch or 7-inch touch screen and may be sold at around the $250 price range.

TechCrunch‘s MG Siegler has claimed to played with a a 7-inch Amazon’s Kindle Tablet running on Android. Unlike other Android devices, Amazon is working all by themselves in the tablet operating system. Seigler writes:

They are not working with Google on this. At all.

If the device is good enough and half the price of iPad, it will surely be the first tablet to pose as a threat to the iPad dominance.

Amazon ad compares Kindle E Ink with iPad LCD screen

You know which would be winner on the outdoor setting. Yes, that was the point of the latest Amazon ad.

A new ad from Amazon makes fun of iPad’s LCD screen’s outdoor display problem and its higher price. A man having difficulty reading on an iPad-like device by the side of a pool asks the woman next to him, how she could read her device in such daylight.

The girl says, “It’s a Kindle. 139 dollars. I actually paid more for these sunglasses.”

Amazon’s Kindle, utilizes E Ink technology that allows users to read without the eye strain common when reading from LCD backlit displays. The E Ink is closest to the printed book, but it can’t display color and play videos.

The Kindle ad video in YouTube has passed 85,000 views today and has been quite effective in sending its message that iPad is worthless outdoor:

Whatever the ad says, iPad is not a real Kindle competitor and Amazon might be comparing ‘apples with oranges’. Sonly reader and the Barnes and Noble Nook should have been Amazon’s target.

Apple can come up with a lot more argument than Kindle can, if they desire to do so. For example:

  • Kindle is dead-dark in night without turning the light on. For example, on can read an iPad in an airplane, in a dim light when everybody is sleeping.
  • Turning page by swiping the screen can also be a point to argue as it is much easier when compared to pushing a button to go to the “Next Page” in a Kindle.
  • Web-surfing in the iPad comes easy, links on reference list and footnotes comes handy in iPad, but not in Kindle.
  • Color is another big thing.
  • One of the biggest point is that, iPad is a computer in itself and Kindle is just a book reader.
  • Kindle has an App to run in iPad. When compared that with 250,000 Apps in the App Store, Kindle reduces to 1/250,000th fraction of iPad.

Said that, I still believe that the ad is catchy and would benefit Kindle over iPad.

First eBook reader to break $100 mark

libre-ebook-reader-pro Aluratek’s Libre eBook Reader Pro has become the first eBook reader to be priced below $100.

The US$99 Libre eBook Reader Pro was previously priced at $169. Said to be “small enough to fit into your pocket,” the device is a 5-inch B&W LCD screen that has 24 hours of battery life.

The price cut game was started by Barnes & Noble, who lowered the price for its Nook e-reader to $199. On the same day, Amazon slashed the price of its Kindle device to $189. Both the E-Ink screens devices were previously priced $259.

The entry-level Wi-Fi-only model of Amazon Kindle is priced at $139 and the and Barnes & Noble’s Nook is priced at $149.
